How Long Should a Parking Occupancy Study Run?

Choose the study window from the decision you need to make, then cover the days, hours, zones, and operating conditions that could change that decision.

Direct answer: there is no universal number of hours or days. A focused operational question may need selected representative windows. A policy, capital, entitlement, or engineering decision may need broader collection designed by a qualified professional. Document why each window was chosen and what it cannot represent.

Use four design inputs

  1. Day type. Separate normal weekdays, weekends, events, holidays, and known atypical periods.
  2. Daily window. Capture the demand build, peak, and release. A single peak frame cannot show how long pressure lasted.
  3. Count interval. Use intervals that show meaningful change without overstating precision. Fifteen-minute detail may be useful for rapid turnover; hourly snapshots may fit a slower occupancy question.
  4. Zone definition. Keep visible supply and zone boundaries stable throughout the study. Report hidden spaces separately.

Validate before expanding the study

Start with one screenshot and a short sample window. Confirm that the spaces are visible, the time stamps are reliable, and hand-reviewed frames agree with reported counts. If glare, occlusion, compression, or darkness changes countability, grade those periods separately rather than averaging them into one confident result.

Report duration, not only the peak

The highest count is one part of the result. A decision-ready report should also show how long occupancy remained near the observed peak, which zones filled first, and whether different day types produced the same pattern. Label the measured windows as observations, not as a claim about every day of the year.

What not to conclude

A short study cannot establish annual demand, prove the cause of a complaint, set a universal practical-capacity threshold, or replace a required traffic or parking analysis. Existing footage may support occupancy and visible zone use, but it may not support turnover, dwell, origin-destination, identity, or enforcement questions.

Is one day enough?

One day can answer a narrow diagnostic question if the team labels it as one observed day. It cannot prove that the pattern recurs.

Should weekday and weekend counts be combined?

Keep them separate when they serve different users or operating patterns. A blended average can hide the period causing the decision problem.
